Ah, who doesn’t love a little romance? February is going to be filled with fancy dinners, red roses, and—if you’re really lucky—maybe some new power outlets with USB inputs. *swoon*

Sorry, we get a little excited when we think of all the ways you can give your home a bit of love. Just like your relationship with your significant other, if you want to happily stay in your home for years to come, well, you’re going to have to put in at least a little effort now and then.
It’s kind of like the difference between dating and marriage: If your relationship is fairly new, you might need to do some things you’re not necessarily thrilled about just to keep your partner happy. (Like watching bad romantic comedies, or maybe football.) But after you build that strong foundation, you don’t have to do stuff like that all the time. In fact, you get bonus points when you do.
What are your “nice-to-haves”?
Once you do the same thing for your house—taking care of all the big stuff, perhaps like replacing the old furnace that was there when you bought it—usually you can avoid the heavy lifting, at least for a while, and focus on the “nice-to-haves.” (Just make sure you stay on top of that maintenance so we don’t have to talk about HVAC filters again, OK?)
What do those nice-to-haves look like for you? Maybe it’s adding an air scrubber to your HVAC system before spring allergy season hits. (Don’t worry, it won’t erase the smell of that nice bouquet of flowers you just brought home.) How about a water softener? We’ll admit, that’s not the most romantic thing in the world—but think of all the time you’ll have for romance when you don’t have to scrub the water spots off of your “clean” glasses every time they come out of the dishwasher, or when the shower doors take two minutes to clean instead of two hours.
Small projects, large impact
Little things like that make a big difference. If you don’t believe us, just ask your significant other. And how many arguments have been started because one person “stole” the other’s plug for the phone charger? With those USB outlets we talked about earlier, all you need is a cable, and goodness knows we’ve all got plenty of those lying around. You might even spot a spare one thanks to your new under-cabinet lighting. Hey, it was just a thought. Installing those lights is not as expensive as you might think!
